British Values at Walton le Dale Primary

At Walton le Dale Primary School, we are committed to serving our community and surrounding area to provide your children with the best education possible.

We recognise, celebrate and embrace the multicultural, multifaith nature of the United Kingdom and understand the crucial role our school plays in promoting these values.

As a community school, we encourage admissions from all those entitled to education under British law regardless of faith, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, political or financial status. We area school for all and this is reflected in our school motto, “Through working together…the best is yet to come!”

This statement outlines the key British values we actively promote.

Democracy
Each class democratically votes for two members to represent their year group on the School Council. This council meets regularly with the Headteacher in school in order to share pupils’ views and drive initiatives, which are linked to improving the school and its community. The work of this group is then reported to the governing body on a regular basis.

Older pupils have links with local magistrates and make visits to local courts to see how the judicial system works in the UK.

The Rule of Law
The school has a clearly defined behaviour policy that positively rewards good behaviour both in and out of school. This sets clear boundaries and expectations and appropriate consequences and engages parents when necessary to further reinforce the school’s rules.

Behaviour is monitored closely and regular reports are shared with governors. As a result, incidents of poor behaviour and racial incidents are minimal.

Close links with the team of local police officers and community officers are valued. Regular visits are made to support the school and to visit and work with the children when requested. Additionally, they support the school promoting safe parking in the interests of our children’s and parents’ safety.

Individual Liberty
Within school, independence and resilience is promoted through encouragement of the pupils taking educated risks, safe in the knowledge that they are supported by a safe and secure environment.

The school provides a wide range of activities within and after school and pupils are encouraged to get involved and make choices based on their own interests. Attendance at clubs is also monitored and pupils are encouraged to try new activities where possible in order to broaden their horizons.

Pupils have key roles and responsibilities within each class and the school, for which pupils actively put themselves forward.

Our Year 4 children are active RotaKids members who work to promote awareness and fundraise for the immediate and global community. This role is supported by the South Ribble Rotary Club. The Year 5 children also learn about the issue of Fair Trade and are working towards obtaining the Fair Trade Charter.

Mutual Respect
Our curriculum embodies values of mutual respect through assemblies and teaching units such as Family Life and Relationships, Positive Contributions, Festivals from other cultures and religions and many more.

Our involvement with the South Ribble Schools Sports Partnership actively promotes attitudes of equality and fairness through competitive sports and tournaments. We have recently been awarded the Silver Award for Competitive Involvement for all the events that the school attends and its successes.

We establish buddy systems which allows older pupils to care for younger ones as they move from the infants to the juniors.

Tolerance of those with Differing Faiths and Beliefs
Our Religious Education curriculum follows the Lancashire Agreed Syllabus, which provides a broad, varied education on a range of faiths, religions and cultures. This is supported by a varied collective worship plan for our daily assemblies.

Within these, our pupils are introduced to other cultures such as Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam. We also study other countries within our Geography curriculum.

We teach French and possess newly developed links with Beijing and Fuzhou Primary schools in China.
