The Highwayman comes riding…

This week, we have been studying the famous poem “The Highwayman” composed by Alfred Noyes.  This tells the story of the highwayman’s visit to see the beautiful Bess at an old inn, and of the terrible fate they both meet.

We have imagined ourselves as characters from the poem and written our thoughts, considered different viewpoints and looked at the imagery, rhyme and rhythm of the poem.  We finish by creating a short movie presentation, consisting of reading the poem aloud, adding sound effects and illustrating the tragic tale with our artwork.

Welcome back!

Happy New Year!  I hope you had a lovely Christmas break and are looking forward to an exciting 2017 in school.

Attached is our Year 5 Spring term curriculum letter, which gives an outline of the areas we intend to cover in the new term.  I hope you find it useful.  Your child in Falcon class should already have brought a paper copy home – please ask for a spare copy if you haven’t received this.

Best wishes,

Mr. Sherwin.

Y5 Curriculum Letter – Spring 2017

The Great WLD Bake-off!

We have just returned from a great morning out at Lostock Hall Academy, where the children have been making bread.

After kneading the dough, we created a bread design of our own, adding the little touches and ingredients to make each one unique in the breadmaking world!  And all wrapped up in a specially-created bag.

Using your loaf!

In preparation for Thursday’s visit to Lostock Hall Academy, we became expert bread testers, commenting on the appearance, smell and taste of several different types, before deciding upon the most popular in the class.

The looks one some faces showed that not every sample was met with 100% satisfaction!

We have been creating still-life drawings and paintings of a group of objects, and trying to carefully show the effects of light and shade on these.

Although our work is still in progress, below are a few examples of Falcon’s budding artists!
